Garden Bed Design

Bed lines and plant layouts that suit the house they're against.

Overview

Explore our Garden Bed Design work

Most tired front yards do not need more plants — they need better bed lines. A bed that is too narrow makes a house look like it is standing in a hallway, and a wandering edge makes everything inside it look accidental. We redraw beds at a scale that suits the house, then layer the planting so there is something structural in winter and something blooming in summer.

We paint the new bed lines on the ground and ask you to look at them from the street and from inside before we cut a single edge. It is a five-minute step that prevents the most common regret on this kind of job.

How it works

Our Garden Bed Design process

No mystery, no surprises — here's exactly how a job runs from the first call to the final walkthrough.

  1. 01

    Assess the house and site

We look at the architecture, the sightlines from the street and the windows, sun exposure through the day, and how water moves across the yard.

  2. 02

    Draw the bed lines

Bed lines get painted on the ground in generous, consistent curves. You walk them and we adjust before anything is cut.

  3. 03

Strip, edge and prep the soil

We cut the new edge, strip the sod, and amend the soil where it needs it so plants root out instead of sitting in a hole.

  4. 04

    Layered planting

Evergreens and structural shrubs go in first for winter interest, then flowering shrubs and perennials in front, all spaced for mature size.

  5. 05

    Mulch and water in

Beds get mulched to depth, everything gets watered in, and we leave you with plain instructions on watering through the first season.

Why E.R. Hardscapes

What you get when we build it.

We're a family-run crew out of Belvidere. The work has our name on it, so we do it the way we'd want it done at home.

  • Bed lines scaled to the house instead of the previous owner's mower path.

  • Layered planting that still looks like something in February.

  • Spacing based on mature size, not what fills the bed on install day.

  • Soil amended where needed so plants actually establish.

  • You approve the painted layout before we cut anything.
