Retaining Walls

Turn an unusable slope into flat, planted, usable yard.

Overview

Explore our Retaining Walls work

A retaining wall is a structural element doing a real job: holding back soil and water. We build segmental block walls, natural stone walls and tiered systems that turn a slope you cannot mow into a level, planted, genuinely usable part of the property.

Walls fail for one reason — water. Ours get a compacted leveling pad, clean drainage stone behind the block, filter fabric to keep soil out of that stone, and geogrid reinforcement into the hillside where the height calls for it. It costs more on day one and it is the reason the wall is still straight in year twenty.

How it works

Our Retaining Walls process

No mystery, no surprises — here's exactly how a job runs from the first call to the final walkthrough.

  1. 01

    Assessment and design

We look at the slope, the soil, where water currently runs and what is above and below the wall, then size the wall and decide whether it needs tiers.

  2. 02

    Excavation and leveling pad

We dig the trench, bury the first course below grade, and compact a level aggregate pad. Everything above depends on that first course being dead level.

  3. 03

    Block placement and reinforcement

Courses go up with the manufacturer's setback, staggered joints, and geogrid layers back into the slope where the height requires it.

  4. 04

    Drainage

Clean drainage stone and filter fabric go in behind the wall with a drain line at the base so water leaves through the wall rather than pushing on it.

  5. 05

    Caps, backfill and restoration

We glue the capstones down, backfill and compact behind the wall, then restore the grade above and below and seed the disturbed areas.

Why E.R. Hardscapes

What you get when we build it.

We're a family-run crew out of Belvidere. The work has our name on it, so we do it the way we'd want it done at home.

  • Drainage stone, filter fabric and a drain line on every wall — not just block stacked on dirt.

  • Geogrid reinforcement where wall height calls for it.

  • Segmental block, natural stone and tiered systems.

  • Reclaims slope you currently cannot mow or plant.

  • Doubles as seat walls, raised beds and planters where it makes sense.
