Steps are the one hardscape element where getting it wrong is a safety problem, not just a cosmetic one. Uneven risers are what people trip on. We rebuild sagging front stoops, add steps between patio levels, and set natural stone outcropping steps into graded slopes.
Every flight we build gets laid out so the risers are equal top to bottom and the treads are deep enough to land a whole foot on. Where a stoop is failing, we usually find the original base was never compacted or drainage was dumping straight against it — so we fix that cause before rebuilding anything on top.

No mystery, no surprises — here's exactly how a job runs from the first call to the final walkthrough.
- 01
Measure and calculate the rise
We measure total rise and run and divide it into equal risers. Equal is the whole game — the step nobody trips on is the one that matches the ones above it.
- 02
Excavation and base
We excavate and compact base under the full footprint of the flight, extending below the frost line at the landing where conditions call for it.
- 03
Build the flight
Paver step units, natural stone slabs or outcropping stone get set and pinned, each tread pitched slightly forward so water sheds off instead of freezing on it.
- 04
Landings and tie-ins
We tie the top landing into the door threshold and the bottom into the walk or patio so there is no lip to catch a toe.
- 05
Backfill, restore and finish
Sides get backfilled and compacted, cheek walls or plantings finish the edges, and we clean the site.
